This Victorian terrace, sitting just back from the seafront at Ramsgate, has the benefit of Westerly views across roof tops from the back garden. The house was undergoing a total refurbishment when Chalcot was engaged, having been left unloved for several years. The new owners, a creative family who had recently moved down from East London, enjoy the outdoors and emphasised the importance of the garden as a relaxed space for entertaining, barbecuing and pottering. Their brief was for a garden that reminded them of Greek holidays abroad.
A fairly narrow sloping site, with a change of level from top to bottom of almost a metre, we have designed a garden that provides spaces for sitting and enjoying the sunset, dining outdoors and barbecuing. The slope was managed by creating different levels and easy circulation. Being a terraced house the only access to the garden was through the building so our design from the outset minimised the movement of materials as much as possible.
We kept the original flint walls in spite of their slightly worn condition as they add character and charm. This was replicated in the pebble lines we put through some of the paving.
Planting is of a Mediterranean concept, designed to cope with free draining soil and plenty of sunshine. Plants include Olive, Phillyrea, Genista, Achillea, Sedums and shrubby herbs.
The garden was built by landscape contractor BDT Groundworks, fencing by Albion Fencing and all completed in 2022.
